Semester exchange for medical students
Medical students from a university outside of Germany can apply for one or two exchange semesters at the Faculty of Medicine.

Incoming students from Erasmus+ partner universities
If you study medicine at one of our Erasmus+ partner universities , you can apply for a one- or two-semester study mobility within our iMED study program at the Faculty of Medicine of Universität Hamburg. The Erasmus+ exchange program is open to students who have finished their third year of study.

Nomination
To be eligible for applying for an exchange programme at our faculty, the Erasmus+ Coordinator of your home university needs to nominate you. Once nominated, we will email you directly and provide you with all necessary information regarding the application and enrollment process at Universität Hamburg.

Enrolment as incoming student at Universität Hamburg
After we have reviewed your documents and accepted you for the exchange, you have to enroll at Universität Hamburg by 31 July (winter semester/full academic year) or 31 January (summer semester).
Medical certification
Please submit a medical certification duly completed by a physician in your home country by 1 September (annual/winter semester) or 1 March (summer semester). The medical certificate shall not be issued earlier than 3 months before the beginning of the semester.

Incoming students from other partner universities of the Faculty of Medicine
As a student enrolled at a partner university of the Faculty of Medicine that is not in an Erasmus+ program country, you will be selected and officially nominated by the International Office of your home university. The registration process is the same as described above under Erasmus+ student mobility for studies.

Incoming students from the central exchange program of Universität Hamburg
Apart from the inter-institutional agreements of the Faculty of Medicine, Universität Hamburg maintains various cooperations that are open to medical students enrolled at a central exchange partner university of Universität Hamburg.

Incoming students as Freemovers
For the academic year 2025/26, students can apply as freemover students.
Requirements
- Enrolled in the 4th or 5th year of a medicine degree program during the guest stay
- German language skills: at least B1-level at the time of the application, B2-level at the semester start

Freemovers cannot apply for accomodation in a student dormitory through the Faculty of Medicine. Thus, the Student Accomodation Forms shall not be included.

Guest stay for medical student refugees
Medical students who have a refugee status in Germany and who have previously studied at a university outside of Germany can apply for a one or two-semester guest stay in the degree program iMED (Medicine).

- Refugee status in Germany

General conditions of the guest stay
- Type of the guest stay: Freemover
- Duration: one or two semesters (maximum one year)
- Costs: see semester contributions of Universität Hamburg. Note: The Faculty of Medicine does not provide any scholarships for freemover students.
- Participation in theoretical and practical courses together with students from Hamburg
- Fulltime schedule with the obligation to attend the courses
- Lessons and exams take place in German
- The University Language Center offers free-of-charge German language courses
- Support by Welcome Buddies (medical students from Hamburg)
- A certificate/transcript of records will be issued at the end of the guest stay

Differences between admission to a degree program and to a freemover guest stay
The guest stay does not conclude with a degree in medicine and is limited to one academic year.
The guest stay does not entitle the freemover student to continue with the medical degree program at Universität Hamburg after the guest stay.

Study program - iMED Curriculum
The Medical Curriculum provides information about the iMED study program.
Students attend two compulsory modules and one elective module (2nd track) per semester.
- Compulsory modules: Medical subjects are grouped into interdisciplinary modules. Each module lasts 6 weeks and corresponds to 12 ECTS. Interdisciplinary examinations for both modules take place at the end of each semester.
- Elective modules: The elective modules called 2nd Tracks offer a scientific approach to medicine in a specific subject. A 2nd Track lasts 2 weeks and corresponds to 6 ECTS. The examination takes place at the end of the 2nd Track.
A list of the compulsory modules and their respective subjects is available in the Medical Curriculum. Incoming students can choose compulsory modules available in semester 7-9:

Buddy-Net of the Faculty of Medicine
The Faculty of Medicine offers a buddy program to guide incoming students before and after their arrival in Hamburg. Students will be informed before the start of the semester.

Student accomodation & finding accomodation in Hamburg
There are limited rooms in dormitories reserved for incoming students participating in an exchange program. Students need to submit the Student Accommodation Form (see application documents above) by 31 May. There is no guarantee for a room. Room offers are sent out to students a few weeks before the start of the rental period.

German language courses
The University Language Center offers free one-week intensive classes in September/October and March as well as regular semester classes.

PIASTA - Intercultural Living and Learning
PIASTA is a program of Universität Hamburg. Each semester, PIASTA tutors welcome all students through the Welcome Week event. With numerous events, PIASTA creates a platform for intercultural exchange and transcultural life at Universität Hamburg.
